Nel 68 in seguito al terribile terremoto che colpì la Valle del Belice, anche la nostra città fu coinvolta in quel tremendo evento. La vita sembrava essersi fermata e così ogni cosa che ruotava intorno a noi, comprese le varie feste e il Carnevale. Il periodo di interruzione delle sfilate negli anni 70, avrebbe potuto significare la fine di una tradizione, il definitivo oblio della festa. Ma quelli che, fin dalla più tenera età avevano ricevuto il gene del Carnevale dai nonni e dai genitori, e lo avevano bevuto insieme al latte materno, alimentarono la loro passione anche in quel periodo, determinando così una importante continuità che avrebbe permesso al Carnevale , non solo di sopravvivere, ma anche di far germogliare i semi per il futuro della nostra festa. Erano quei “matti ” del sabatino. L’appuntamento, infatti, era per ogni sabato sera. Dove? In un garage messo a disposizione da chi lo possedeva. Di solito, fuori città. Si ballava, si cantava, si recitava, si faceva spettacolo. Nacquero anche delle giovani Band. Lo spirito gioioso degli sciacchitani e la loro passione per il Carnevale non si poteva spegnere.
Il sabatino di Cutrone era nato per iniziativa di un gruppo eterogeneo composto da artigiani e gente dello spettacolo, messi in sintonia , “coordinati”, per così dire da Angelo Pumilia. E di quelle belle serate fanno fede queste vecchie foto, con scene di cabaret, di balletti sempre diversi, con i primi costumi creati in casa, parodie, imitazioni…insomma…a Cutrone accorrevano persone da ogni parte di Sciacca, al punto che il garage non li conteneva più.

Che ti fanno allora Marco Marchese , Leonardo Maniscalco e i fratelli Mendola, i Bentivegna e loro tanti collaboratori? In una settimana costruiscono una sala più grande che potesse ospitare più persone.( Allora si poteva fare.)
C’erano diversi gruppi che , in settimana, preparavano i loro numeri per l’esibizione del sabato. Nessuno metteva al corrente gli altri della loro performance in preparazione. Era sempre una sorpresa, ma non una vera improvvisata. Facevamo anche le prove, ciascuno in casa propria: in salotto, in cucina, in mansarda.
Le foto sono parecchio sbiadite, ma non i nostri ricordi di quel bellissimo periodo, fatto di un divertimento sano, semplice, di spirito di famiglia intriso con la passione del Carnevale. Si iniziava a ballare e si alternavano i musicisti dei balli tradizionali con giovanissimi delle band. Si suonava dal vivo.
A mezzanotte precisa, le donne tiravano fuori le “sporte” piene di ogni ben di Dio, mentre gli uomini si davano da fare per approntare una tavola al centro della sala. Acciughe, frittate, olive, pani cunzatu, pasta al forno, salsiccia con patate…e tanti dolci. Iniziava così la seconda parte della serata e, col senno di poi, a nessuno veniva il mal di pancia o il reflusso gastroesofageo e nessuno soffriva di questi malanni, allora. Si stava tutti benissimo e in grande allegria. Quanti eravamo? Intere famiglie, compresi tanti bambini che non sentivano freddo, mangiavano tutto e si divertivano tantissimo.
Da lì é iniziata la nostra avventura nel Carnevale degli anni 80.
“Dal 1974 al 1983, si colloca la terza fase del “carnevale vecchio” con la presenza di carri con copioni e bozzetti grafici. “Dopo cento anni dal suo inizio – scrive Pippo Verde – cominciò gradualmente a delinearsi una progressiva ma netta diversificazione tra il vecchio e il nuovo carnevale: per la prima volta fu redatto un bando apposito per regolamentare i gruppi mascherati, uno dei quali si piazzò davanti al carro SOS che cominciò a sfilare a terra (fino all’anno precedente i gruppi animavano spontaneamente sopra il carro per tutta la sfilata)”.
E poi venne “Lu munnu é un circu”…
La rinascita del Carnevale era iniziata…
